Mind-Full
mind cradled to quiescence
rolling with the static waves
of a modern soundscape
silence become
uncomfortable
unprofitable
unheard
unwelcome
in the search for anodyne
thought rattles uncertain
in silence
the rhythm skitters
tick tick
time
to find
in silence
waiting quietly
is voice
is breath

Summer Flight Triptych
above the pub lawns
poppy seeds scattered on silk
the summer swallow
softening peeps
flutter sunset pink and grey
galah in dusk
wings gliding east
on fading aeroguard tang
hush summer’s end

Musical magpie discourse
backing track for wild heart’s ease
Now with threat see maggie swoop
terrible, rabid defence
Bloody hell! With boundaries agreed
reigning in peace – so could we?Written in the Korean sijo form, westernised for English, about an Australian experience
Magpies are a highly intelligent species, with complex social structures, and an indescribably beautiful voice. Our wild magpies often make friends with humans, and initiate complex communication rituals with people they see as friends. Come Spring however, their relentlessly aggressive defence of their nesting territories, strikes terror into every Aussie heart, man or child. They won’t attack if you are Friend.

Fortified Against
What wonder Mother’s handbag
that Tardis-like hold
From band-aids to magnifiers
a torch for the night;
a tool set is no surprise
Scented hankies and hand soap
a five metre tape;
the least of all its supplies
Barley sugar and apples
a needle and thread
All contingencies planned
to soothe pending dread
One can’t be too ready
you see
For the keeper, trusty stash
of Earl Grey tea
