‘Old Man’s Beard’
winding through sun and shade
gaze held high
past detours kindly embraced
old wood patterning new

Thread
an unexpected fragrance
sudden on the autumn night air
warm paraffin
memory of a candle
somewhere
flaring bright
time briefly wobbles
and is gone
with the scent of nostalgia -
Ode to Coffee
inhaling, savouring
sweet prophylactic bitterness
sharpening
the corners of the mind
bracing the soggy edges
of a coddled ego
inoculating
against the rigours
of the day to come
even decaf yes
(no hate)
our ptisan
for the world-weary brain

The Space Between
Even in silence
there is a rhythm
those moments
between
then
and then
and then
when the world just quietly waits
for the next
beat
everything simply being
in perfect stillness
even me
and my heart is full

Step On a Crack
ribbity rabbity
one two three
thoughts jitter in my head
on a flea ferris wheel
ribbity rabbity
four cracks
– what?
the thoughts in my head
just won’t SHUT UP
is everything right today?
what if it’s not?
five six seven cracks
next pace…
STOP!
(ribbity rabbity)
… going again
thoughts in my mind
cycle tail on end
eight nine ten cracks
count till they’re done
you know what happens
if you miss just one
the worry skitters in
if you miss the beat
a busy little spider
with prickly little feet
The ritual of the beat sings
ribbity RUN
danger coming now, why
what have I done?
there must be a reason
amygdala chimes
from a falsely alarming
tricksy mind
ribbity rabbity
one two three
thoughts judder in my gut
on a flea ferris wheel

Circle Dance
curbside drift
of autumn leaves
edges
dancing in the sun
tuned to light-of-heart
breeze, like
the lace
of mother’s skirt
at her daughter’s
wedding

Connected
My heart is lonely tonight
yearning to enfold and be enfolded
in the warm, peaceful, embrace
of fellow love
In the soft of night
I feel for those threads
delicately spanning the world
One soul connected to another
and another
lighting, lightening all hearts
and winding back again
to me
in my warm cocoon…
